콜론(Colon):

1. 전술한 내용에 대해 (자세한) 설명, 예시등을 하는 절 또는 구가 뒤따를때.
The sentence was poorly constructed: it lacked both unity and coherence.


2. 동격어에 대한 직접적 주의를 끈다.
He had only one pleasure: eating.


3. 일련의 내용이 계속될때.
Three countries were represented: England, France, and Belgium.


4. 인용된 내용을 인용 부호를 쓰지 않고 들여쓰기를 사용해 내용의 나머지 부분과 구분할때.
I quote from the text of Chapter One:
5. (책 등에서) 제목과 부제를 구분할때.

6. 정중한 통신문에서 서두의 인사말 다음에.

콤마(Comma) ,

1. and, or, but 등의 등위 접속사로 연결된 종속절을 주절과 분리할때.접속사가 사용되지 않은 매우 짧은 절들을 분리할때.
She knew very little about him, and he volunteered nothing.
I came, I saw, I conquered.


2. 주절 앞에 오거나, 주절 사이에 끼는 부사절(또는 긴구문)을 구분.
When she discovered the answer, she reported it to us.
The roport, after being read aloud, was put up for consideration.


3. 전환어구(on the contary, on the other hand), 접속부사(consequently, furthermore, however),
설명 또는 예를 인도하는 표현(namely, for example)을 구분.
Your second question, on the other hand, remains unanswered.
He will travel through two countries, namely, France and England.
He responded as completely as he could; that is he answered each of the individual questions specifically.


4. 문장 내에서 반대 표현을 구분.
The cost is not $65.00, but $56.65.
He changed his style, not his ethics.


5. 연속으로 나오는 단어, 구, 절들을 분리.
He was young, eager, and restless.
It requires one to travel constantly, to have no private life, and to need no income other than living enpenses.-Sara Davidson
주 : 콤마는 명사를 수식하는 등위 형용사를 분리한다.
The harsh, cold wind was strong.


6. 문장으로부터 등위어구를 분리(비 한정적 수식어나 비 한정적 동격어)
Our guide, who were a blue beret, was an experienced traveler.
We visited Gettysburg, the site of a famous battle.
The author, Marie Jones, was an accomplished athlete.


7. 직접 인용의 앞, 의문문이나 감탄문이 아닌 직접 인용의 뒤, 분리 인용의 전후에.
Mary said, "I am leaving."
"I am leaving," Mary said.
"I an leaving," Mary said with determination, "even if you want me to stay."
주 : 인용된 내용이 주어 또는 주격 술어로 쓰이거나 인용된 문장이 실제 대화가 아닌 경우는 콤마를 쓰지 않는다.
"The computer is down" was the reply she feared.
The fact that he said he was about to "leave this instant" doesn't mean actually left.

8. 직접 호칭, 독립구, 가벼운 감탄의 말을 구분.
You may go, John, if you wish.
I fear their encounter, his temper being what it is.
Ah, that's my idea of an excellent dinner.

9. 문장으로부터 부가의문을 분리.
It's a fine day, isn't it ?

10. 특히 문장의 앞부분에서 쓰인, 단어(들)이 뒤에서 생략됨을 표시.
Common stocks are preferred by some investors; bonds, by others.
주 : 콤마가 쓰이지 않아도 문장의 뜻이 명확하면 콤마를 생략한다.
He was in love with her and she with him.

11. 모호함을 피하고, 특정한 구를 강조하기 위해.
To Mary, Jane was someone special.
The more embroidery on a dress, the higher the price.

12. 이름을 꺼꾸로 쓸때.
Morton, William A.

13. 고유한 이름과 뒤따르는 칭호와의 구분.
Santa H. Cobb, Vice President.

14. 지명, 날짜등을 문장의 다른 부분과 구분.
Shreveport, Louisiana, is the site of a large air base.
On Sunday, June 23, 1940, he was wounded.
Number 10 Downing street, London, is a famous address.
주 : 연과 달만 사용될 경우 문장의 뜻이 명확하면 콤마를 생략한다.
She began her career in April 1983 at a modest salary.

15. 정중하지 않은 통신문의 서두 인사말 다음, 모든 편지의 말미 인사말 다음.

대쉬(Dash) -

1. 통상 문장이 계속되는 중간에서 급작스런 변화 또는 중단을 할때.
When in 1960 the stockpile was sold off-indeed, dumped as surplus-natural rubber sales were hard hit.-Barry Commoner

2. 특별히 강조할 필요가 있을 경우 때때로 다른 구두점의 자리에 대신 쓰인다.
The presentations-and especially the one by Ms. dow-impressed the audience.

3. 일련의 단어나 구에 뒤따르는 설명을 인도.
Oil, steel, and wheat-these are the sinews of industrialization.

4. 인용문의 출처 앞에.
My foot is on my native health...-Sir Walter Scott

5. 감탄점이나 의문 부호와 함깨 쓰일수 있다.
The faces of the crash victims-how bloody!-weere shown on TV.

6. 콤마가 쓰여져서 기본적으로 두개의 절을 분리할 자리에 쓰여져서 콤마의 필요성을 없앰.

1. 인용절내에서 한개 또는 그 이상의 단어의 생략을 표시.

2. 인용절내 한 문장의 끝에서 쓸때는 점이 네개. 첫번재 점은 문장의 마침표를 나타냄.

3. 시에서 줄길이 만큼의 절이 쓰였을때 한줄 또는 그 이상의 줄이 생략 되었음을 나타낸다.

4. 대화에서 머뭇거림 또는 완결되지 않은 문장을 나타냄.

하이픈(Hyphen) -

1. 줄 끝에서 잘라지는 단어를 연결할때.

2. 접두사와 어간의 조합;

⑵ 모음으로 끝나는 고유명사 + 같은(비슷한) 모음으로 끝나는 어근.
ⓒe °­¼¼¸| ¹Þ´A A¢μI≫c + 어근, 특히 이 조합이 하이픈을 쓰지 않았을때 다른 의미를 가지는 경우.
